What is e-commerce?
E-commerce solutions may vary from tracking parcels
to buying shares to simplifying procurement processes,
the underlying link being the use of information
technology and the Internet to revolutionise business
processes and customer relationships. As such
the ongoing rise of the Internet and the application
of e-commerce has implications for the design,
development and administration of all IT systems.
What does an e-commerce
specialist do?
Depending on the level of responsibility and the
particular job role, duties may include:
- Developing custom programs to extend the function
of the website, such as online security, payment
and ordering systems.
- Integrating internal business systems with a
browser based interface for customers to interact
directly with the company’s systems.
- Designing the processes and architecture of the
company’s Internet presence.
- Designing, developing and maintaining the
company’s intranet business strategy by providing
advice to business units and coordinating related
activities.
- Administering the day-to-day operation of the
server software, monitoring the logs and usage
statistics, adjusting configuration settings as
required and backing up the system and handling
system security.
- Overseeing the technical and creative team from
conception of an online project through to its
delivery.
- Coordinating the on time, on budget delivery of
e-commerce solutions.
- Aligning the client’s web presence with its business
strategy, analysing and specifying ecommerce
application system requirements through
consultation with both the client and development
team.
The recent development of the web/Internet
technologies and e-commerce as an emerging career
stream within the industry has meant that there are
no traditional career paths in place. Typically, web
architects have experience in programming and
systems design, with ecommerce roles generally calling
for experience in either business systems analysis
and systems development, depending on the role and
responsibilities involved. Whilst not all the positions in
this field are technical, you will need to have a strong
grasp of the relevant concepts such as HTML, XML,
JavaScript, the Internet, browsers and Client / Server
side processing.
Personal Qualities
- A business outcome approach.
- An ability to conceptualise and think creatively.
- A capacity to articulate visions.
- Interpersonal skills to evoke commitment from the
client.
- Sound administrative skills and good analytical and
reporting abilities.
- Understanding of user needs.
