What is a Database?
A database is a collection of data stored in computers and
is accessible in a variety of ways. The software to control
the database is a set of programs that create, manage,
protect and provide access to the database. It’s called a
database management system.
What does a Database Administrator do?
A Database Administrator (DBA) monitors and co-ordinates
database activities. They act as a guardian to the enterprise
data, monitoring the security of the database. They
determine the best way to organise, manage, store and
dispose of data. DBA’s design reports and forms to present
the information their customers need, make changes
and test everything before it’s put on the shelf. They are
responsible for enforcing data standards, maximum use
of computer resources to ensure speed of response and
overall system performance.
DBA’s may be involved in the design of new databases,
determining data requirements, coding, testing, installation
and maintenance. When upgrading to new systems, they
would be responsible for the transfer of data to the new
system.
DBA’s need a strong knowledge of PC applications and
database management, and knowledge of programming.
